Once defined, twice shy

Following my last post I cannot resist adding two more definitions from The Devil’s Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce and again wonder how he would have defined some of the objects that clutter up our modern cyberworld.

TELEPHONE: An invention of the devil which abrogates some of the advantages of making a disagreeable person keep his distance.

TELESCOPE: A device having a relationship to the eye similar to that of the telephone to the ear, enabling distant objects to plague us with a multitude of needless detail. Luckily, it is unprovided with a bell summoning us to the sacrifice.
