The Irish Daily Mail apparently exists because I came across a copy this summer. Squashed into the bottom of an inside page was a small article highlighting the fact that French and in fact Spanish are out of favour in terms of the foreign languages Irish students want to learn and think important. Top of the list nowadays is Chinese: not surprising the story argues given the prominence of the economy and the rising number of Chinese people now living in Ireland, 60,000 compared to the approximately 1,000 in 1986.
The same page has a large article on how a local Irish politician was caught out using a twitter alias to attack members of his own party. The main headline is however: “How Catriona lost a fortune over a model agent” and needless to say the photo of Catriona is much bigger than that of the politician. There were no photos of Chinese people on the page.
